Darker-colored and opaque gemstones can be polished instead of faceted. This is called the cabochon cut, which consists of a smooth, rounded surface with no facets for the light to dance off of. It does, however, create the "cat's eye" and "star" effects, which are equally beautifully in their own way. Cabochons can be made from stones that contain more inclusions, as the polishing process masks them beautifully. This can also be done with translucent stones, but is less common because the lighter the stone is, the more likely it is to show obvious flaws, even after the polishing process to create a cabochon.
